Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. – Psalm 20:7
Ja Morant is out for the season. He just got back. He brought life, excitement, and most of all, hope, for a team that all of Memphis backs. It’s devastating if we look at it through worldly eyes. What’s the Lord have in store for this team and for Ja?
The Memphis Grizzlies hold a special place in the hearts of Memphians. They reflect the city, playing with a chip on their shoulder, proudly putting in the work and being rough around the edges. Z-Bo captured the essence when he said, “It’s a blue collar town and I’m a blue collar player, a hard worker.” He went from Portland troublemaker to beloved Memphis legend. We were hoping Ja’s self-proclaimed redemption tour was part of his growth process.
And now this.
I feel a little strange praying for the Grizzlies. They are professional athletes. They are entertainers. They are adored and paid well. But they are also people, and all people need Jesus. They need to know that their identity is not found in their status, not in championships (though admittedly fun), or in being Ja’s alley-oop partner. It’s more than that. You, dear reader, are more than what you do or who you associate with. You are made in the image of Christ, a beloved child of God, sons and daughters of the Most High.
Yes, Ja is weapon on the court, but that’s a game. We will miss him and pray for swift recovery, but more importantly, I pray that he knows that he is loved whether or not he ever plays at that level again.
Dear Lord, for the city of Memphis, remind us of your steadfast love. Remind us that our hope is not found in our collective aspirations for a basketball team. Remind us Lord that we should care more for the person wearing a jersey than what they are able to do while in it.
We do lift up the Grizzlies organization to you. You know how much of a blessing that team is to the community. We pray that the team comes together and becomes a sum greater than their individual parts. We pray Coach Jenkins and his staff continue to find ways to motivate and encourage the team. We pray, that as fans, we find ways to encourage and motivate the team. We pray for full recoveries for Ja, Stephen Adams, Brandon Clarke, and several others. We also lift them up to You, that they seek You in this time when they are not able to use their athletic gifts that you created them with. Grant them patience. Lord, may we place our faith in You. Amen.
