Tonight, Lord, I want to pray for High Point Terrace.

Thank you for the many families and friends making this neighborhood welcoming. Thank you for the wonderful small businesses like High Point Grocery, Cheffie’s, and High Point Pizza, that serve our community. Thank you for the annual 4th of July Parade that brings out the whole community and allows us to celebrate and greet one another.

Lord, with all of this, forgive us for not being better neighbors. May we know each other. May we look out for one another. May we encourage one another. May we open our doors and love one another. Form relationships among us that allow the Holy Spirit to live within us. We ask for break-ins to cease and vehicles to drive responsibly. May the streets of Eastland, Mimosa, Cardinal, Highland Park Place, Waynoka, Northwood, Aurora Circle, Autumn, Philwood, Sevier, Shirlwood, Kenwood, Charleswood, Johnwood, Oakley, Swan Ridge, and Woodland be blessed and protected.

    In Your name, Amen.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Genesis 2:15

We have a wonderful park system in Memphis. Tom Lee Park is a national treasure. Overton Park’s golf course, greenspace, and old forest blend well with the Memphis Zoo and the current Brooks Museum. Audobon Park has completed it’s massive golf course renovation, opened Leftwich Tennis Center, and has housed the Memphis Botanic Garden for years.

When you look at the org chart for Memphis Parks, the citizens are the leaders. That’s pretty cool. They steward 5600 acres in 192 locations. https://memphisparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Memphis-Parks-Executive-Summary.pdfThis number doesn’t count other state parks like T. O. Fuller located within the city limits.

Lord, bless this land. May these parks serve as places of community and refreshment. Bless the workers who are responsible for ensuring cleanliness and safety at these parks. May they be places for celebration with friends and family. Lord, may the citizens of Memphis recognize the blessing these parks are to our community and steward them appropriately. In Christ’s name, amen.

Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
    Genesis 13:17

The University of Memphis Women’s Soccer Team is getting a new stadium honoring Liza Fletcher. The fund https://www.lizaslight.org/ looks to raise $7MM in the first round to bring top-notch facilities to the student-athletes of Memphis.

Our friends, family, and city still mourn the loss of Liza Fletcher. Her impact, even in death, is great. The generosity of the family and those involved shows God’s promise to be true, that death has been defeated.

Lord, though we mourn, we also celebrate the inspiration that is and was Liza Fletcher. Bless this stadium and the grounds, that they may be a reminder of how precious life is and how to live a precious life. Fill the coffers with funds and opportunities for those involved in the program. May they be filled with the grace of God and love of Christ. In Your name, Amen.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33

A brother is seven years clean by the grace of God. I’m proud of him. I’ve seen how God used his lowest points to connect with others. Our suffering can be the seeds for sowing relationship.

Lord, tonight we lift up those who have struggled with darkness, lived in the pit, and by Your grace have come out the other side, healed and made anew. Your power, love, and mercy is for all.

May we lift up the work of organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Kairos Prison Ministry to You, Lord. Be present in the meeting. May the Holy Spirit take residence in the hearts of those attending. May wounds be healed and life resurrected. Lord, we pray for powerful witness from those You save.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6

Today is the first day of school for Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Our new superintendent, Dr. Feagins, is making tough decisions. The school board has four new members. Twelve schools had to dismiss early today because of HVAC issues. Many private schools open this week and more open next week.

Lord, we come to you tonight with the hopes that accompany a new season, a new school year. We pray for the teachers and staff that they see the best in each child and work to raise them up to their highest potential. We pray for the students, grant them courage and boldness in tackling challenges. Protect them on their way to and from school. Protect them in school. Lord, may the Holy Spirit be present in the halls and classrooms, guiding young minds to wise decisions.

We pray for new leadership in Dr. Feagins. We pray for her success in the role and for the definition of success that we should measure. Lord, keep kids in the classroom. Halt the truancy. Stop the violence. Lord, remove obstacles from learning for our students.

We pray for the HVAC systems to be fixed by tomorrow morning at Chickasaw, Sherwood, Douglass, American Way, and Treadwell middle schools, Manassas, Sheffield, Booker T Washington, and Dexter, Snowden, and Whitney elementary schools. Lord, prepare for these students a safe and comfortable building conducive to learning.

We pray for the new school board members, Natalie McKinney, Tamarques Porter, Sable Otey, and Towanna Murphy, that they seek you for guidance in their new roles. Lord, bless this body and be in the middle of their decision-making as they provide oversight to the district.

Lord, bless the parents. Sustain them. Help them rise early to get their children ready and labor into the night. Encourage them. May their concerns for their children be heard. Keep them involved in their child’s education.

We pray all these things in Your name, Amen.
