He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly[a] with your God. – Micah 6:8High Ground News shut down at the end of 2024. I was hoping it was just a hiatus. The stories told were ones not often in the spotlight, about neighbor helping neighbor, lifting up the community one dedicated person or group of people at a time.
At the top if their website was their mission:
We cover Memphis neighborhoods with nuance and center the experience of residents. We expose Memphians to stories of their neighbors across the city. We seek to rebalance the news by exploring challenges while focusing on the people and solutions moving Memphis forward.
For me, it was a wonderful place to find organizations and people I could offer prayers for, including some mentioned on this site.
Tonight, Lord, we lift up our prayer to You, thanking you for High Ground News and the work they did sharing the good works most don’t know about. Their organization highlighted the good in an often broken place and we pray that their work and that spirit will rise again in a different form. Lord, for those who were profiled for loving their neighbor, may You encourage them once again. May Your light shine upon, one that can never go out. We pray for Memphis and the many children of God working each day to bring Your kingdom closer to reality. In Christ’s name, amen.

Be Holy
15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a] 1 Peter 1:15-16 Father, tonight we lift up the people of Memphis. We confess our sins, of lust, of selfishness, of vulgarity, of disobedience, of greed. We seek our…

Father, tonight we lift up the people of Memphis. We confess our sins, of lust, of selfishness, of vulgarity, of disobedience, of greed. We seek our own comfort. We tread on each other. We harm each other.
That’s not who You called us to be. For those of us who know You, may You work in our hearts, cleansing us form the inside out. For those who don’t know You, may they see the works of Your children and come to know You. Lord, we ask that you lead us not into temptation and that You deliver us from evil, for Memphis is part of thy kingdom, and we wait expectantly for Your arrival. In Christ’s name, Amen.

A dozen or so members of Christ Methodist Church are heading to the Bidi Bidi Refugee Resettlement Camp in Uganda for around 10 days at the beginning of August. They will engage in a variety of activities including vocational training in farming, community service projects, and evangelistic outreach. On top of the nearly 200,000 residents, mostly who have fled from war in South Sudan, in a place the size of Orlando, the travelers will also be among the Aringa, an unreached people group.
Prayers are requested for believers working to spread the Gospel among the Aringa, as well as for God’s guidance for Ruth Lomo and her staff. This initiative aims to support and uplift the refugee community in Bidi Bidi and foster positive relationships with the Aringa landowners. Prayers for Ebenezer Global in the work they are doing to form relationships.
I took most of this information from the website from the church linked above. I’m excited for the participants to see God at work, and participate in it. I pray for boldness in proclaiming the Gospel, doing so led by the Holy Spirit, and with a kind heart. May this be transformative work, for those going, those receiving, and our congregation upon return. May our hearts swell for those who don’t know Christ, and may we be encouraged by the love and courage of our fellow congregants doing what we are called to do. Lord, we lift the group up for protection form the adversary. Lord, we pray for the residents of Bidi Bidi, that they come to know You, and I lean on the Holy Spirit because I confess I don’t know how to pray for them. Grant them acces to clean water and meals each day. May they have hope in a broken world. Bless the travel and time in Bidi Bidi. In Christ’s name we pray, amen.

Usually these posts start with a verse and then tie to Memphis. Tonight, the flooding in Texas and the tragedies and heartbreak of children lost is on my mind.
We must rest in a promise. We must rest in Jesus dying for our sins, that we may walk with Him in heaven. I’ve seen numerous prayers regarding the Camp Mystic loss. They are heart wrenching and beautiful. The world is small and many are connected by friend or family to the tragedy. 27 lives lost. At a Christian Camp. Where we drop our children off and pray for blessings and spiritual growth.
It seems cruel, like deaths inside churches – I’m reminded of Birmingham church bombings and the Charleston church shooting – that a life ends violently in God’s house. And I don’t have answers, nor can I hope to offer sufficient reasons at this moment. God does not need justification and even stating that risks misinterpretation.
So I look to scripture and am reminded that we are not meant for this world.
I’ve found the verse:
“There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” – Luke 13:1-5
Lord, we pray for the souls now gathered with You, that they are made new, no fear or injury of what’s to come. We pray for those mourning their loved ones lost in Camp Mystic and the Kerrville area. We pray that bitterness does not take root and that those calling out to you also remember that You have conquered death. Remind them. Comfort them.
May we live each day drawing closer to you, Christ Jesus. May we be intentional about loving others and following You. Do not let us live lives fearing death. Amen.

Order our of chaos. Day 1 was creating a day, separating the day and the night. God’s creation was good, is good. And the night, as His creation is also good.
We see the stars at night. We call it gazing at the heavens. We reflect on our insignificance, and are thankful that, through Christ, we are, in fact, significant to our Creator.
Our God is an awesome God. Too often in Memphis, our nights consist of violence and sin, but that’s not because of night. Night is for dreaming, to hear the silence, to seek God. I pray this night that He comes close to You. Amen.
