Keep Building the Wall
When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2 and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day?…

Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?”
3 Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”
4 Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of[b] the builders.
6 So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart. – Nehemiah 4:1-6
I’ve been involved with education and education reform since I graduated from college in 2006. Back then, charter schools were new and No Child Left Behind was major bipartisan legislation that was meant to shine a light on performance on all students, increasing transparency and removing, as President Bush said at the time, “the soft bigotry of low expectations.”
People still don’t understand charter schools. They believe they are taking away resources from public schools when, in fact, they are public schools. They trade increased autonomy for increased accountability. They are schools of choice, meaning they are open to any child in the district. They try to succeed in areas where the predominant neighborhood schools have not. If they don’t, they are shut down.
In Tennessee, if the local district does not view a charter favorably, they can deny them the ability to operate. The school can appeal to the state. There are politics involved. If the state approves the school on appeal, it can operate, but in many cases, the most suitable buildings to operate a school inside of the district are owned by the same district that didn’t want them to begin with. They can deny access to the school by not leasing or not selling the property to the charter organization.
That’s what is happening currently in Binghampton. I’m biased for Drew Sippel and his team at Lester Prep because I know them. I know how much they care and are working to improve the educational and life outcomes of their students and their community. They are seeing results but were denied by the local district for charter renewal. However, they were approved by the state. So far, the district has not been willing to engage in leasing or selling their current space. The local school board rep does not want them around.
I’m reminded of Nehemiah and his decision to keep working despite those nearby, those with local power and influence, working to sabotage his efforts in rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. Tonight, I lift up the same determined spirit for the Cornerstone Prep and Lester Middle School community to the Lord. May their work continue, not in vain, but with support from above. Lord, we ask for softened hearts to listen to the requests of this school organization. We pray for a home for the students and faculty that bears fruit. We pray for a transformed community, where health and improved outcomes are evident based on the work of this group.
Lord, encourage those working for good and seeking Your will. Bless Capstone Education and Drew Sippel’s leadership. Open the doors You want them to walk through.
In Your Name, amen.

My youngest son wants to know all of the rules to all sports. He is 4 and he picks the games up quicker than my other two did at his age. This past summer, when my middle child preferred Lego camp, my youngest attended Jimmy Chambers Basketball Camp. I’ve seen Jimmy for years around the Christ Church’s athletic program but never really had any interaction with him other than a polite greeting.
Then last week, I read the following story on WREG about a 14 year old who was saved from going down a gang-entwined path: https://wreg.com/news/local/kids-and-crime/why-a-14-year-old-honor-student-joined-a-gang-and-what-it-took-to-get-out/
Down in the article I read these lines. (Emphasis mine.)
His aunt called her friend, Jimmy Chambers. He’s a gang investigator in Shelby County and at the time, had began mentoring boys in similar situations to Wilson’s.
“I said bring him right now. Bring him to me,” Chambers said.
The two had a long talk, and Chambers didn’t hesitate to step in.“I went back to the hood and found the little leaders, and I advised them he is off limits. He is mine now, and if you want to continue to bother him, then you bother me,” Chambers said.
I’ve thought about this declaration and claiming all week. I want to know the man Jimmy Chambers even more now than before. How many other people do we know that are doing amazing things in Christ’s image? Jimmy’s declaration to the gang leaders also makes me think of how Christ claims us out of a fallen world. What a rescuer and redeemer we have in Jesus and how fortunate was the young man Jimmy saved.
Both Jesus and Jimmy stood in the gap for someone else. (In Jesus’ case, that would be all of us.) Their love was their strength. That strength is a comfort for those protected by it. It is a witness to this world that their is a higher power that will be obeyed. We do not have to succumb to this fading world. Thank God.
Father God, we thank you for claiming us as Your own. You show us that all life created in Your image is precious. Thank you for Jimmy Chambers and the untold stories of others who stand up and protect the weak. Lord, bless them. Bless their work. Protect them from evil. Equip them with courage and strength. May Your Holy Spirit be present in them.
Lord, raise up more sons and daughters of Christ who claim your lost sheep and bring them back into the fold. We confess our selfishness and fear to you that keeps us tucked away under blankets or behind keyboards. Work in the pews to convict Your children to act boldly in obedience to their faith. Darkness shall not prevail over light.
Lord, may we claim victory, in Jesus, today. In Christ’s name, amen.

Train up a child in the way he should go,
[a]And when he is old he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6
Lord, may we seek you with our whole hearts. Prevent us from forgetting and shunning our responsibilities as parents. May we draw strength form the Father to be mothers and fathers. Break our addiction to our phones, work, self-importance, so that we may raise up and lead children of God.
Work in us Lord, that we recognize our shortcomings and bring them to You. We cannot raise strong children if we don’t come to You for strength. Lord, this world is broken. You have loved us and yet we ignore You. Call us to Your word. Imprint it on our hearts. Renew our mind and spirit so that we abide in You.
Lord, open our eyes to those willing to help us. Sometimes we don’t stop long enough to see who’s waiting for us. Other times we push away those who bring Your light because we have lost our trust in others. Grant us discernment when You set divine appointments.
Remind us Lord of Your promises. You are a good good Father. That’s who You are. In Christ’s name, amen.

In that day they will say,
“Surely this is our God;
we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the Lord, we trusted in him;
let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.” – Isaiah 25:9Lord, when the world burns, we call on You. Forgive us for our ignorance during peaceful times. Each day is a battle that we often don’t know we are fighting.
Lord, we lift up the city of Memphis to You. Forgive us for our sins. May Your people call upon you and be heard. We pray for our judicial commissioners. We pray that they show up. We pray that they use Your wisdom and call on You for discernment.
We lift up John Marshall, Robert Barber, Rhonda Harris, Kevin Reed, Christopher Ingram, Shayla Purifoy, Ross Sampson, Serena Gray, Terita Hewlett, Mischelle Best, Kenya Smith, Zayid Saleem, Kathy Kirk Johnson, and Leslie Monzingo to You Lord. Protect them in their roles. Lord, grant them the authority to keep the wicked locked up until the court system can adjudicate the case. Lord, may our juveniles choose righteousness over evil. Lord, may our leaders not be handcuffed in their discipline.
We are a fallen people since Adam and Eve, yet we know You Lord. Redeem our community. Bless our neighbors. Work in our own hearts that we may light in the darkness. In Christ’s name, Amen.

The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.2 Samuel 22:31
Lord, please protect Your chosen people on the global day of jihad pronounced by the terrorists. Lord, watch over the Jewish people around the world. We pray Lord, for peace, and we pray for friends and family members in Memphis. Lord, I do not claim to understand the entire history of the conflict, but I do know that man is fallen. I pray that Your glory is revealed in this chaos, this war.
May all of Your people turn to You, seek You with their whole hearts, and choose life. Lord, we pray for protection and look to You to provide it. Hear our cries. Bring back those stuck in Israel at this time like the Park sisters. In Your Name, Amen.
